This step-by-step tutorial will guide you through the process of making a functional drinking mug. This is part two in this series. Part one begins with how to make a slab tumbler. If you haven't learned how to do that, make sure to check out the tutorial and come back when you're ready to add a handle.

Since this will be for kitchen use make sure the clay you're using is food safe.
  • ceramic clay (this will require a kiln to fire)
  • cloth canvas or a cut piece of denim
  • rolling pin or other large cylinder object for rolling (an empty jar or wine bottle works well)
  • sharp pencil or pin tool
  • sponge or soft paper towel
  • small cup of water

1. Begin by building your tumbler form. If you need help check out our tumbler tutorial here.
Decide where you will attach your handle. If you'd like a seamless look then we recommend attaching the handle along the seam where you connected and blended your slab piece.
2. Roll out a large coil. A coil mug handle is a great place to start for beginners. Remember to account for shrinkage when deciding how large to make your handle. It's better to make your coil larger and cut to shape.
3. Rest one side of your coil on the tumbler wall, roughly where you'll be attaching it. Drape the coil down in handle "shape" to see where it will fall. Depending on how wide or tight you'd like your handle, you can adjust the attachment points. Experiment with different lengths and shapes to see what looks and feels best.

4. Once you've identified the right handle size and length, cut your coil to size. Cutting it also ensures you have a flat, even surface for easier attachment.

5. Time to use the "scratch and attach" method! Using a sharp pencil or a pin tool, "scratch" the two points where you'll attach your handle to the tumbler wall.
6. Next "scratch" the two ends of your coil. When scratching it helps to go in different directions, like a grid pattern, to ensure secure attachment.
7. Gently attach your coil to your tumbler form. You can add a tiny drop of water to the attachment points if your clay needs it.
8. Use your fingers to support the inside wall, and carefully begin blending the coil handle into the tumbler body. Move slowly and carefully. You can use your fingers, or a dry paintbrush for tighter spaces. Remember that you can gently smooth your project once it's leather-hard for a more polished look. For now make sure the handle is securely attached and set.

9. Once your handle is securely attached and set, allow your project to fully dry before kiln firing and glazing. If you'd like a more polished look, gently smooth it once it's leather hard (before firing).
10. Congrats! You've made your very own mug! You can experiment with different handle styles and shapes to find the perfect one. Another easy mug handle we love is the "slab handle" pictured above. Simply cut a long rectangular strip of clay and follow the same steps to measure and attach.
