Wall planters are a unique way to save space and add plants to your walls. They can hold air plants, dried flowers or artificial plants, adding greenery to any room. This is a simple form and a great beginner clay project for all ages.
a clay covered hand holds an oval slab of clay flat on a canvas covered tabletop.
1. Flatten a ball of clay with the palm of your hand.
2. Using a rolling pin, jar, or other round object, roll out the clay into an oval. Making sure to flip and rotate the slab to ensure even thickness and reduce air bubbles.
3. Once you are satisfied with the size of your oval slab, use a pin tool or sharp pencil to trim off excess clay for a clean edge. A larger oval = larger planter.
4. Place hands at each end of the oval slab. Support the slab and use fingertips to turn one side of slab across, and behind the other end, curving as you fold until it meets itself. Click here to see this motion in video form.
5. Use your thumb to apply pressure on the inside seam of the wall planter. This will ensure it stay together when fired.
6. Using pin tool or sharp pencil make two side by side holes at the top of the planter. Once planter is fired, add a piece of string for an easy self leveling hanger.
Once you've practiced the form, customizing your wall planter is the next step. Take a peek at our existing planter designs to get ideas flowing.
